Kagarama secondary school is a school of excellence due to their academic performance in Kicukiro District.
It has both A' level and O’level. In A’ level it has four Combinations i.e. PCM [physics, chemistry and mathematics], PCB [physic, chemistry and biology], MCB [mathematics, chemistry and biology] HEG [history, economics and geography].
K.S.S has 964 students and 21 teachers who are professional and well qualified. In A’ level 66.1% of the students offer sciences, 33.9% offer Arts and 48% are still in O’ level. Kagarama has different educational activities that help in the high-pass mark of students as explained below in details
Such as During class hours, Students in the library, in the laboratories, During prep time, Field works and lastly gender balance in education at K.s.s.

DURING CLASS HOURS
Class hours begin at 8:00am and end at 4:30pm.During these hours all students have to be in class with their teachers busy learning. So at this time, no students are allowed to be outside unless its break time or Lunchtime. This makes students to concentrate and have enough time with their teachers which helps them to succeed.

IN THE LIBRARY

The school library in Kagarama is well stocked with all kinds of textbooks and novels and its always open. This helps students to have enough time for making research and improve the reading skills .
Students are allowed to use the library when they are free and following the library rules like maintaining silence and managing time. Again the school library is composed of more than 10430 books and past papers that help students to make their revisions.

IN SCIENCE LABORATORIES.

Kagarama secondary school has three(3)science laboratories i.e. physics, chemistry and biology laboratories plus the computer laboratory which are well equipped.
The science laboratories are mainly used by science students in doing their practical work with their teachers and smartly dressed in their lab coats as shown in picture above. Practical's done by students include; the fermentation of alcohols, blood test, setting up electric circuits etc……

The computer lab is also available for the students and has enough computers to use during their computer class lessons, students also get time to use internet for various researches and communications.

DURING PREP TIMES
at Kagarama start at 7:30pm and end at 9:30pm.During this time, every student has to be in class very busy revising or discussing with fellow students. This gives time to students to read their books and ask what they don’t know from their fellows.

FIELD WORKS AND SEMINARS
Kagarama s.s also organizes field works and study trips for students across Rwanda annually. Students also engage into seminars and discussions with other neighboring schools which helps them exchange ideas, Knowledge and acquire more. Hence enabling them to pass highly.

GENDER BALANCE IN EDUCATION IN K.s.s
as a mixed school it promotes gender balance by offering the same equal support to both boys and girls in their studies. The best students from both gender groups are awarded equally by being given bursaries or school requirements. This encourages them and makes them work hard hence developing their knowledge and skills.

THE SCHOOL BACKGROUND


The school was established in 1995, it started with 45 students from Uganda in Mpingi district where there was a school called Kagurwe secondary school. Those students and their Head master Mr.NKURUNZIZA Peter Clever were all Rwandese by nationality .

And after coming to Rwanda with his students, the Ministry of Education gave him a place to set a school for his 45 students and that was at E.T.O (Ecole Technique Official De Kicukiro) in Kicukiro district.From that moment the school was named Rwanda International Academy. The school had 3 streams per class in O level and in A level there was 3 combinations from S.4 to S.6. I.E. Maths & Physics, Biology & Chemistry and Humanities.

During that time the staff members and the administrators were as follows.

Bursar Tuyisenge Anita
Mr. Nkurayija Salongo who was in charge of teachers and students food and he’s currently serving as the patron of Kagarama s. s. By 1998, the school changed its name from Rwanda International Academy to Kigali International Academy.

In 2000 the school shifted and came to Kagarama sector near Nyanza sector of Kicukiro district.And again in 2005, the school changed its name now to Kagarama Secondary school which now is it’s present name up to this date and that’s when it became a government school.From 1995 up to 2013, the school continued changing its leaders i.e.the headmasters from the one who started the school to the present one as follows; The chronology of the school.

Kagarama Secondary School was on Tuesday crowned the champion of the national boys schools cricket week for the sixth year in a row after beating rivals Efotec SS by nine wickets in the final played at Kicukiro Cricked Oval. Efotec SS won the toss and elected to bat first little did they know that would befall them in their title setting target of at least above 150 runs in the 50-over game. The first time finalists were restricted to a paltry 39 runs in 11.4 overs.

In their chase, the five-time winners coming into this year’s tournament reached the target of 40 runs in five overs and lost just one wicket. Man of the tournament, Bryson Bugingo, scored 16 runs not out for the defending champions, while Valens Muvunyi was the pick of the bowlers with a haul of three wickets for nine runs and was ably supported by Derrick Rwagitare 2-9.

Kagarama skipper Bugingo, who scored a total of 155 runs in the tournament, said, “We are happy to win this tournament because we have been preparing for a long time and we hope to retain it again next year.” “We came into the final game very confident and focused to regardless of whether we were to bat or field first, we put pressure on them and managed to restrict them to just 39 runs,” he added.

Nicola Iradukunda, the captain of the losing Efotec SS captain said, “Winning and losing is part of the game, we managed to reach finals but we lost. However, we got some experience and we believe that next year we will be up there again.” In semi –finals, Efotec SS beat GS Giporoso,

while Kagarama SS saw off IPRC. Eight teams took part in the three-day tournament that started on Sunday. The girls’ tournament will take place in September. The schools participating in this year’s boy’s tournament included; Kagarama SS, Efotec SS, Apred Ndera SS, Lycee de Ruhango, GS Giporoso, GS St. Joseph, IPTC and Apade SS.
